Gascia Ouzounian

Gascia Ouzounian is associate professor of music at the University of Oxford. Her research spans sound studies, urban studies, media theory, and the politics of listening, with particular interests in sound and violence, sonic urbanism, sound art, and experimental sonic practices. She is Principal Investigator of the European Research Council project Sonorous Cities: Towards a Sonic Urbanism (SONCITIES), which develops new approaches to sound as a critical dimension of urban life. Ouzounian is the author of Stereophonica: Sound and Space in Science, Technology, and the Arts (MIT Press, 2021). Her second book, The Trembling City: The Sonic and Atmospheric Violence of Vibrational Warfare (MIT Press, 2026), examines the role of sound in contemporary conflict and state violence. She is currently editing Sonic Urbanism: A Critical Guide (Bloomsbury Academic), which brings together international scholars, architects, artists, and urban practitioners to advance sonic urbanism as an interdisciplinary, experimental field of research and practice.
