In this video, “Performing Shange,” Barnard students pay tribute to Ms. Shange with ensemble performances of dance, music, and theater. Led by music producer and BCRW Alumnae Fellow Ebonie Smith ’07, the students perform excerpts from Ntozake Shange’s oeuvre. Their collective discussions of Shange’s work resulted in adaptations and original pieces that are both directly and indirectly influenced by Shange’s work and aesthetics. Finally, the performers engage questions from the audience concerning their connections to Ms. Shange’s work and the nature and process of their collaboration. Performers include Katherine Bergstrom CC ’14, Gabrielle Davenport ’15, Victoria Durden ’15, Sarah Esser ’15, Taylor Harvey CC’14, and Simone Sobers ’13.
