“Once a girl teased me by saying, ‘We don’t want to play with you because you have dark skin.’ I was pretty upset, but not too upset. I told my mother. She said she would call the girl’s mother, but she wanted time to think about how to do that in the best way. To my mother’s surprise, the girl came to our house the next day when I was already at school, and she apologized for what she had said to me. When I came home, my mom said to me, ‘I wonder why she decided to do that?’ So I told my mom how I had gone to the girl’s house on my own, and told the girl’s mother about what had happened. The girl’s mother promised to have a talk with her daughter. My mom was very proud of me for having the courage to stand up for myself.”
