Jang-Otto Family

“When I started to speak in Chinatown, I knew that my parents would hear about it so I had to come out to them too. It had also become hard for me to sit at the dinner table with my family and not be able to talk truthfully about my life, so there were personal reasons for coming out to my parents as well. My mother was very stoic; she didn’t say anything at all. She’s still like that. It’s an unspoken issue. In Asian culture, what you do is a reflection of your family. This is a tradition. Although many Asian gay and lesbian people are out to friends and to colleagues at work, they are most often not out to their families because they’re really afraid of shaming them.”
