Gabri Christa
Gabri Christa hails from Curaçao, Dutch Caribbean, and lives in New York City. Her original works for the stage and screen aim to create understanding for humanity through the arts. Awards include a Guggenheim for Choreography, an ABC television award for creative excellence for her short film “High School,” five Jerome Foundation grants, and Pangea Day Festival’s “One of the World’s 100 Most Promising Filmmakers” distinction. She’s a Senior Atlantic Fellow for Equity in Global Brain Health. Her award-winning films have been screened worldwide. Her recent short film “Sheila” (2022) won several prizes for best short experimental and screendance film. Both her award winning films “Kasita” (2014) and documentary “One Day at a Time” (2016) can be seen on the Global African Diaspora streaming service Kweli.TV. She is the founding director of the Moving Body, Moving Image Festival, a biennial social justice screendance festival. A dedicated educator, she is an Associate Professor of Professional Practice at Barnard College, Columbia University, where she teaches dance and film and directs the Movement Lab. She is on the cultural advisory commission for the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
