Shayoni Mitra

Shayoni Mitra is Senior Lecturer, Department of Theatre at Barnard College, Columbia University. She teaches courses on South Asian performance, political and feminist performance, and performance theory. Professor Mitra has essays in various peer reviewed journals such as Contemporary Theatre Research, The Drama Review, Asian Theatre Journal, Economic and Political Weekly, and Comparative Studies in South Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Her chapters on Indian theatre and women’s performance are included in the edited volumes Gender, Space, Resistance and Mapping South Asian Through Contemporary Theatre. Professor Mitra has a PhD in Performance Studies from New York University, and a M.A. and B.A. in English literature from Delhi University. Professor Mitra was also an actor with Jana Natya Manch, a street theatre company based in New Delhi, India.
